My fall semester with my teachers Kalle Palmer and Peter Jana worked on climate change through biology and humanities. In biology, we did research papers on Famosa Slough and learned about climate change impacts. In humanities, we learned about philosophies and applied them to climate change solutions.
How can nutritional food become more equitably accessible? My fall math semester project with my teacher Jim McCue focused on food equity and data analysis. We spent time with food justice organizations to experience what they do to combat food in the community. We conducted research papers that focused on the organizations we worked with, connecting data with the food inequalities. My group; Adrian Rivera, Lourdes Twilegar, and Gia Carvajal; partnered with Olivewood Gardens to see how their programs are impacting the community, mostly National City. Olivewood Gardens connects students and families to the natural environment through food, education and engaging communities. Here is our research paper and exhibition presentation.
Below are pictures from our visits to Olivewood Gardens, where we experienced their programs and collected data. There are also pictures of our exhibition, which was a collaboration with a sophomore team that also worked with food equity. We worked with other students that also worked with Olivewood Gardens and discussed what we both found in panel discussions.
I continued to my spring semester with my same teachers with their Innocence Project! We worked on real cases with the California Innocence Project, getting hands on experience of looking through case files and presenting in front of lawyers. Unfortunately, I cannot show my work due to a nondisclosure form, but we did work on mini projects after we finished with the CIP! Below are my pages for the books we worked on for the rest of the semester.
"Behaviors of the Brain" included research and art about a brain behavior we each were interested in.
"Justice for All?" was a criminal justice system book of short stories about injustices we researched. I wrote about the problem of juveniles charged as adults. You can purchase the book here.
Ocean Discovery Institute Internship
As part of our curriculum, juniors are required to find and work at an internship for the last month of school. I ended up working at Ocean Discovery Institute, helping out with their school programs! Click below to read the assignments I have done for my internship.
